Show A photograph of the Hungerford Academy located in Springville, Utah. The academy appears to sit on a street corner and is surrounded by a dark colored picket fence. The building itself is made up of semi-dark brick with three sets of parallel windows lining the top level of each visible side, and two sets lining the bottom level of each visible side. Two double wide doorways are visible on each wall. The double door on the far left has one door open. A structure stands to the right of the Academy in the background. It appears to be a church because of the vaulted stain glass windows and its arched entry way. The foreground consists of a dirt road intersection and a tree |

The photograph is in good condition. It slightly faded and is glued to an aged, tan, mat backing. The mat has a pattern that encircles its border. Written on its border to the right is "Church." Along the bottom is written "Academy," and on the left is written "Home." All these marks have been made in pencil and are fading. The back is covered with the following pencil handwritten marks: "R-2 Hungerford Academ [sic] Springville [;] Hungerford Academy. About 10 yrs ago consolidated with Mt. Pleasant [.] Replaced first school. Sold." There is also an undecipherable pen inscription above the word "Springville." "In 1890 the territorial legislature passed the public school act, and this was the death knell for Presbyterian schools in Utah. One by one the day schools closed. Hungerford Academy closed and merged with Wasatch Academy in 1913; New Jersey Academy followed suit in 1934. Sheldon Jackson College, which had developed out of the Salt Lake Collegiate Institute in 1897, was reorganized in 1902 and renamed Westminster College. It moved to its present site in 1911. Wasatch Academy in Mt. Pleasant and Westminster College are the only two surviving Presbyterian schools of the forty-one established beginning in 1873." (H.
