Show A close-up photograph of the fire that destroyed the inside Converse Hall on the early morning of March 12, 1926. This photograph is a straight on shot from the east side looking west. Most of the windows have imploded from the blaze and it is visibly apparent that the roof and the top floor no longer exist. The outer structure of the building appears sound. A hose lying on the ground is visible in the foreground. |

This photograph is only in fair condition because the top half of the picture has been torn away. Written on the back is the number "20" in parentheses. Early on the morning of Friday March 12, 1926 a fire destroyed the inside of Converse Hall. The fire was noticed by a student and a passing milkman who saw smoke coming out the east door of the hall at about 5:30 A.M. A fire alarm was immediately sent, but fire fighters were unable to control the blaze. The damage was extensive, destroying a library collection of more than 14,000 books when the top two floors collapsed upon one another. The books were early classics of which 2,500 were donated by early trustee and former pastor of First Presbyterian Church William M. Paden. Classes were moved to Ferry Hall, Foster Hall, Gunton Chapel, and other college campuses while a campaign for $60,000 was successfully raised to rebuild the hall.
