Show A group photograph of the 1924 football team at Wasatch Academy. The group of sixteen young men and their coach pose in front of a large slightly parted curtain on what appears to be a stage. They pose in a uniform two row formation with the back row standing, and the front row sitting in chairs. The young men are wearing multi colored semi dark and dark football uniforms which consist of jerseys with stripe patterned sleeves (some with indecipherable insignia), semi-dark colored pants, knee-high dark colored stripe pattern socks, and multi light and dark colored shoes. The player in the middle front row is holding a football with "1924" inscribed in white. On the back row, far right, is a man (probably the coach) with his arms folded wearing a light colored shirt, tie, and dark colored button up sweater. There is little detail in the room where the young men pose for the photograph. It is very dark and the floor appears to be semi-dark colored wood. |
Further Information |
This photograph is in good condition. The edges and corner show slight creases and wear. Written on the back, in blue ink, is the following: "Football Team [,] Cut no. 28." Written in pencil is: "Football Team [,] 4 ½ X 7 ½ Wasatch." A stain is also visible near the bottom right corner. Wasatch Academy was founded on April 19, 1875 by the Reverend Duncan James McMillan whom also had a major influence in founding Westminster College. A protégé of Sheldon Jackson, he came to the Salt Lake Valley in March of 1875 to find refuge from his bronchial condition and to establish a proselytizing mission to convert Mormons. However, McMillan soon turned his efforts to education when his proselytizing efforts towards the Mormons proved futile. He then founded Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant, Utah and opened a number of subsequent schools of the same nature in northern and southern Utah. |
