Show A group photograph of ten members of the student council at Wasatch Academy. The decor of the room is immaculate. Most of the students and their advisor are seated at a dark wooden table and are sitting on wooden chairs. Four members of the group (all young men) are standing behind the table and the individuals seated. The young men and women are dressed in an array of light and dark (mostly dark) colored clothing which consists of dresses, skirts, blouses, shoes, hosiery, pants, suit coats, and ties. The floor of the room appears to be a light colored patterned rug. The background is dominated by a wall with the window dressed in light colored drapery and floral trim. Light fixtures are attached to the wall on either side. These fixtures are light colored and have switch chains dangling from them. Another light fixture is seen hanging directly over the table. Other items in the room are a dark colored upright piano on the far right, and a light colored radiator on the far left. The border of the photograph has a fading effect. The top is the most noticeable as it feels out of proportion with the rest of the borders along the bottom and sides. The top has an almost vaulted fading effect. |
Further Information |
The condition of the photograph is fair. The upper left corner is missing and the corners have nicks and creases in them. A pinhole is visible in the top border at the very center. Written on the back, in blue ink, is: "Student Council [,] Cut no. 36 [,] Size 4 ½ by 6 ½." Written in pencil is: "Student Council [,] 4 ½ X 6 ½ Wasatch [circled]." The back also shows slight signs of yellow discoloration due to ageing. Wasatch Academy was founded on April 19, 1875 by the Reverend Duncan James McMillan whom also had a major influence in founding Westminster College. A protégé of Sheldon Jackson, he came to the Salt Lake Valley in March of 1875 to find refuge from his bronchial condition and to establish a proselytizing mission to convert Mormons. However, McMillan soon turned his efforts to education when his proselytizing efforts towards the Mormons proved futile. He then founded Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant, Utah and opened a number of subsequent schools of the same nature in northern and southern Utah. |
