Description The concept of aging in place is becoming more popular among American senior citizens. Aging in place allows older adults, typically 65 years and older, to live in their preferred environment with greater independence than they would enjoy in a nursing home while continuing to have access to adequate health care. One major deterrent to aging in place is the risk of injury that may lead to preventable hospitalizations. These hospitalizations not only cost patients and their families, but also the U.S health care system. Home health agencies (HHAs) can help lower the financial burden on both the families and the U.S health care system, while still allowing the patient to live in their house. This project aims to help increase awareness of the use of HHA services among senior American citizens to help them age in place. This guide will not only facilitate independent living but will also provide information on how to obtain required home health services and payment options. HHAs are a good option for seniors because they can help prevent unnecessary hospitalization due to falls, dehydration, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) and many health issues. They can help seniors live in their own homes as long as possible and cut down health care costs for Medicare, Medicaid and patients' families. A literature review consisting of four research studies documents the effectiveness and efficiency of HHAs in preventing avoidable hospitalizations among 65 and older adults is presented in this research project.
