Show Bountiful 2001 'Mixed Media' worth trip 64 works on paper from 47 artists on display By Dave Gagon Deseret News visual arts writer When Horton Foote wrote "A Trip to Bountiful" he wasn't talking about Bountiful, Utah. But I am. Take a trip to Bountiful and see "Utah 2001 Mixed Media & Works on Paper," an exhibit that will impress even the most jaded viewer. The exhibit is the child of the Utah Arts Council's Visual Arts Program, under the direction of Lila Abersold. The jurors for the show were Christine Giles, associate curator of art for the Palm Springs Desert Museum, and Bruce Guenther, curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Portland Art Museum. Sixty-four works of art from 47 artists were selected for display. While there are a few minor or weak pieces in the exhibit, the majority are as good as anything you are likely to see in any gallery in the western states. Adrian Van Suchtelen's "The Four Seasons: Winter" (oil/gesso) can only be described as sublime, and Terry Scopes' "Gold Energy" (mixed media) assaults the eyes like Russian icon upchuck-it's moody and visually involving. Joseph Ostraff's "One Square/One Cube" (encaustic/oil) is gutteral geometry at its finest and Larry S. Hodgkinson's "4 Eyes" (woodcut) is some kind of animal with no good up its furry sleeve. Martin Blundell's two mixed media collages, "Earth and Sky" and "Genesis," achieve a perfectly balanced disharmony; George Mark England's "St. George, Utah" (mixed media) is another of his GPS nose snubbing fanciful tourist maps.
