Description Silicon oil endotamponade is frequently used for repair of complicated retinal detachments. Clinical reports and histopathological analysis have shown that silicone oil can penetrate into the optic nerve and even migrate into the brain. This histological study was performed in order to evaluate pressure dependent silicon oil penetration from the globe into the optic nerve after silicone oil instillation after removal of the vitreous body.
