The Exquisite Corpse was invented in 1925 by the Surrealists André Breton, Yves Tanguy, Jacques Prévert and Marcel Duchamp. The Surrealist Manifesto, written a year prior, called for art that engaged the unconscious by using dreams and automatic drawings. One way of unlocking the psychic space, according to Breton, was through games like the exquisite corpse, which hinges on free play, unpredictability, and collaboration. Breton once explained that the game both strengthened the "ties that unify" its players and allowed them "to take our common desires into account." The work included in this book uses the exquisite corpse ideology to examine the relationship between photography, text, and interpretation. All of the work was created collaboratively by students in ART 4720, Color Photography: Alissa Allred, Chyna Farrior, Isaac Gomez, Hari Jung, and Kolie Kollar. |
