Title Engen Bell
Photo Number P0418n1_13_01
Description Photo of the bell used used for 34 years to toll the start of ski lessons at the Alf Engen Ski School at Alta, Utah. It was obtained in 1955 as a gift from the Rio Grande Railroad to Martha M. Engen, Alf Engen's mother. Prior to 1955, the bell was on a locomotive engine. It is estimated to be from the 19th century, but no official records are available to verify its exact age. At the end of the ski season in 1989, Alf retired as Director of the ski school and gave the bell to his son, Alan, who named it "The Engen Bell" in honor of Alf and Martha. The bell is now on display at the Alf Engen Ski Museum. Photo dates from before it was presented to the museum in 2002
