Description The genus Enterococcus consists of gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic organisms that are ovoid in shape and appear on smear in short chains, in pairs, or as single cells). Enterococci are found in the feces of most healthy adults, with Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium being by far the most commonly identified species. Enterococci are less commonly found at other sites, such as in the vagina and the oropharynx.
