Description |
Excerpts concerning Utah from the Annual Report of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs - Courtesy of the University of Wisconsin Digital Collections. The Commissioner of Indian Affairs claims that the "barbarism" of the American Indian has been a direct influence for the development of federal Indian policy. The Commissioner discusses the status and affairs of tribes across the U.S. and reports that the Utah Superintendent has made efforts to prevent conflict between Indians and whites along trails that lead to California, Oregon, and Washington. The Commissioner recommends consolidating the federal treaty system. The Utah Superintendent reports that relations between Indians and whites are peaceful within the territory and that the Utes had agreed to let the whites occupy and cultivate portions of their land. The Superintendent also gives a description of his trip to visit tribes along emigration routes. Governor Young provides an estimate of the cost of supplies for the Indian agency |
