Description |
The Summer Youth Program at the Indian Walk-In Center is program intended to help youth develop various skills to improve their lives. One such skill is to understand healthy lifestyles through physical fitness and nutrition education. For my Integrated Service Project I worked with this program developing a curriculum for Native American youth to gain the necessary tools to help them rise above the national statistics that show this population to be at risk for many debilitating diseases. For six weeks I taught lessons, played games, and spent quality time with 40 children ranging from first grade to twelfth grade in hopes of helping them begin making more wholesome lifestyles choices. It was a learning experience for me in understanding public health, youth education, and community volunteering with organizations such as the IWIC. The experience has ultimately been compiled into a resource binder that will be used by future program leaders in realizing the healthy lifestyles component of the summer youth program. |
