Title |
Address before the American Bankers' Association's convention in New Orleans, November 14, 1935 |
Description |
Stenographic transcript (27 pages) of an address by Marriner S. Eccles at the American Bankers' Association's convention in New Orleans, November 14, 1935. The speech highlights and defends the recently passed Banking Act of 1935. Also included is correspondence in advance of and following the convention. Rudolph Hecht, President of the Association that year, and Gurden Edwards, Director of Publicity, were the chief correspondents with Eccles, and Elliott Thurston, Special Assistant to Eccles, wrote numerous messages on his behalf. Among the correspondence are notes he sent along with copies of his speech to various people, wishing to correct "some of the garbled accounts carried and the wrong impressions given by the press." He noted that "I did not prepare a written speech, but spoke from some notes which I wrote after I got to New Orleans and had read and listened to the reactionary and trite addresses of some of the previous speakers." |
