Games & Gathering: Revitalizing, Upgrading, and Implementing - A Path to Promoting Wellness

Due to the significant amount of time residents spend at work, the pediatric resident lounge is an underutilized location to promote workplace well-being and prevent burnout. Research has shown benefits of board games, coloring, and entertainment in the workplace. As such, the hypothesis was developed that entertainment upgrades and a wellness noon conference would provide an outlet for residents to relieve stress, promote social connections, encourage emotional well-being, and be a positive emotional outlet during the workday. Aims: Increase resident wellness and bonding through entertainment improvements and a wellness noon conference. Actions: A wellness grant was obtained and project aims were adjusted based on funding availability. Impacted residents received a survey for input on entertainment to be implemented. Based on the results, board games, puzzles, and art supplies were purchased and introduced at a wellness noon conference. Subsequently, the items were stored in the resident lounge for ongoing use. Three months after implementation, a survey to assess outcomes was distributed. Summary: The post-implementation survey showed the interventions promoted resident bonding, emotional well-being, and a healthy work environment leading to resident stress relief. Interventions were also found to have the potential to improve resident mental health.
