The idea for this Honors Thesis came about more than three years ago while I happened to be taking a class on Modern Art and a class on Twentieth Century novels. The professor of the novels class, Phil Sullivan, gave me the opportunity to present a special project to the class on the similarities between twentieth century art and literature. Ideas discovered during the preparation of that project form the basis for this thesis and have developed into a class called The Convergence of Art and Literature: Picasso and Eliot. The written work of this thesis serves as a format, a testing ground, for the topics of the class. Of course, everything that we will discuss in class is not included here. By focusing on particular works of art, however, I hope to demonstrate the nature of the interdisciplinary approach that the class will be taking toward Picasso and Eliot's works. |
