Amyloidosis is a disease resulting from pathological extracellular deposition in tissues of a proteinaceous material called amyloid substance. First described over a hundred years ago as nothing more than an unidentified material found during autopsy, its presence today as a complication in a variety of disorders presents a constant challenge to clinicians and scientists. Recent advances in immunology and a better understanding of protein chemistry and ultrastructure have led to a better comprehension of the factors involved in the mechanism of its deposition, but the solution to the amyloid problem has by no means been found. |
