Description |
This image shows several primordial follicles and an unusual follicle approaching the preantral stage. What is unusual is that this follicle contains a binucleated ovum. Although parthenogenic division of the ovum may be an initial sign of atresia, if the two ova would divide completely before ovulation we could have fraternal twins. Identical twins form after fertilization if the zygote separates while the cells are still pluripotential. UCLA Histology Collection. |
