The songs are based on a comedy written in 1753 by librettist Charles Simon Favart (1710-1792). Favart, the son of a pastry chef, began his career writing lyrics to tavern songs. His bawdy ballads moved from the streets into vaudeville shows, from there into the Opera Comique, and then into print. Or, vice versa. The comedy upon which these songs were based was one of many parodies of one of the most popular operas of its day, Bertoldo, Bertoldino e Cacasenno. Favart often set new text to existing melodies and wrote new dialogue based on a familiar plot, reworking in comedic fashion the compositions of Rousseau, Lully and others. The music for Bertoldo was written by Vincenzo Legrenzio Ciampi (1719- 1762). Ciampi, who lived in London from 1748 to 1760, was maestro di cappella at the Ospizio degli Incurabili in Venice. He wrote operas, oratorios, masses, and instrumental works, including sonatas, concertos and overturess - all in court style. Venetian playwright Carlo Goldoni (1707-1793) wrote the libretto for Bertoldo.
