Abstract Hanson (b. 1931) recalls growing up in Logan, where he contracted polio in the fall of 1937 at the age of six. He was sent to the Los Angeles Children's Hospital for nine months. He relates his experiences with daily physical therapy, hospital food and care, his fellow patients, schooling and overall care, a return to Los Angeles for a series of follow-up corrective surgeries, and the use of orthotic devices to compensate for differences in leg size. Other topics include his resumption of full activity (including high school sports), residual effects of the disease and post-polio syndrome. Interview is part of the Polio Oral History Project.
