Show i *\%}s<° Fort Douglas, Utah 16 June 1973 Dear Dr. Atiya, Per our conversation of 14 June 1973, I am forwarding herewith the background material that you requested for your files and for preparation of the subject letter of reference. As I indicated to you, now that my doctoral program has been completed, I am being reassigned by the Air Force. My next post will be as an intelligence officer attached to NATO's 6th Allied Tactical Air Force at Izmir, Turkey. I have been advised by the Air Force that the University of Maryland Overseas Program (Europe) frequently needs and uses Air Force instructors on a part-time basis, and that this program is in operation at the facilities in Izmir. Inasmuch as the program is largely designed to provide academic instruction for members of the armed forces and their dependents, it is officially supported by both the Air Force and the Army. In order to participate as a part-time instructor, I must submit transcripts, a Personnel Record Form, and letters of reference to the University of Maryland. These are examined by the appropriate academic department(s), and if my qualifications are deemed acceptable, I will be granted University of Maryland teaching approval. The university's overseas offices schedule all teaching assignments according to the needs of the program. Classes are normally held in the evening, twice a week, for eight weeks and are three hours in duration. Three semester hours of credit are given for each course. I am particularly anxious to participate in this program for two main reasons. First, I think it will be an excellent means of maintaining my currency in Middle Eastern affairs, and secondly, it will provide me with a measure of teaching experience. It is my intent to undertake teaching as a full-time career upon my retirement from the Air Force, and thus the acquisition of teaching experience is a necessity. I am most grateful for your decision to provide a letter of reference on my behalf. This letter should make reference to the Overseas Part-Time Teaching Appointment of Major Robert B. Patrick; the basic application was submitted on 12 June 1973. Further, your comments should be addressed |
