Uintah Railway Station

A railroad station was built in 1905 at 80 North Vernal Avenue in anticipation that the Uintah Railroad would extend its rails to Vernal. Although the intended railway never made it to Vernal, freight, mail and passengers were hauled by freight wagons and stagecoach. Later after 1910 automobiles began to replace the stagecoach. Containing both freight house and a passenger depot, the Uintah Railway Office saw shipments every day of the week, both in and out of Ashley Valley. In the upper floor of the Uintah Railway Office, the telegraph office connected Vernal to Dragon and Mack, Colorado. John Q. and Sarah Logan, pictured in front of the building, were hired to manage and operate the telegraph line exchange. This photo was taken during an election.
