Ranch House at the "K" Ranch

As early ar 1891 the K-Ranch was in business. It was a stopping place for both outlaws and lawmen in search of outlaws. The first herd of cattle to flock into northwestern Colorado was a band of 1,400 longhorns which came up fron Texas over the Cherokee trail in early 1872. They were owned by an eccentric little fellow known only as Doctor Kiser, having his pick of the land he chose to locate in a charming spot at the foot of the Blue Mountain. His brand was the letter "K" on the left hip and so the place became known far and wide as the K Ranch. He sold out to Bishop Hatch and brothers who ran the ranch for several years. The ranch is a well known landmark near the Utah Colorado line and is head-quarters of the horse and cattle interest of Charles Popper, who later moved to New York. He left Hy Meeks as an agent for selling the property(1907). It was sold to Thomas Morgan, a ranch man from Steamboat Springs, Colorado, who held the ranch for many years. It was in 1914 that the Lincoln Highway, now Highway 40, was built near the K Ranch.
