Anthropologist Franklin Barnett and his wife, Joan, along with our Prescott, Arizona, alumni friends, Sid and Helen Knapp, spent four days plastering, sanding, painting and enclosing the statue which has become a landmark of the Mission. We show you Franklin working and the results of Our Lady's restoration. She has had a difficult history! Standing serene in the right wing of the log chapel church, Our Lady of the Navajo constant ly reminded us of the peaceful, soft speaking and happy Navajo womanhood. The Christ Child lay in a cradleboard in her arms. She was made by Mrs. Platt, wife of Father Platt now of Long Island. Candles reflected the prayers made to her daily. Along with the altar, she survived the June 21, 1964 fire which destroyed the log chapel. Although Brother Juniper tried to find all the missing parts that cracked off in the terrible heat, some were lost. These have now been restored. Now trees outline the site of the Old Church and a lawn is planted inside. This garden reminds us of our beginnings and Our Lady still keeps watch. We are so grateful to have her all dressed up for our birthday. On Monday, May 20, relief food for 288 families was delivered by the Mission. Sorry there is no room for pictures! Our Bishop visited us for three days at the beginning of May and about 140 were given the Sacrament of Holy Confirmation. The Bluff group and choir posed just outside the New Church building. He visited Bluff, Aneth and Montezuma Creek. In April we welcomed Herold and Marge Goddard back from their speaking trip in California and they are busy already with summer projects. Our old friends, students and faculty from the Colorado Rocky Mountain School, joined us for a week I to be the first work group to arrive in 1968. Many will return to attend the July 25th celebration . We are hopeful many will come for that day from all over the world. Camping sites are available as well as motels in the town of Bluff. We are on paved highways and all are welcome! If you can't come, wish us well with a birthday offering and thanksgiving for this work. We pray for you all. MISSION PORTRAITS: • • • David Police Born near the Mission, raised near the Mission, working at the Mission. David's life at St. Christopher's is one to be copied more often. We certainly look forward to the time when Navajo People can administer this work and bring the good news of Christ and His Holy Sacraments to all of God's People in this area. David is a humble boy end works constantly at the little jobs which are so hard. Yet in building the good life that God gives us these jobs are the very foundation upon which all other work rests. He never had a chance to finish school as many now do but David is especially talented in teaching us the right way to use the Navajo language. Patiently, patiently, he repeats the words for salt, pepper, sugar, plate and hundreds more at mealtimes. An awkward attempt by us is always a time for laughter! Then he tries again and again. Please say a personal hello to David when you stop and visit us.
