Show Hon. Commissioner, 2. which have been cut and used in building Indian houses and fencing the lands which they have located upon for farms. Shat they "did not want any white man digging mineral: * that they "want Wayman sent away;* referring to the overseer of ditches on the Uintah Reservation to whoa they object and whom they aislike because he has put in the ditches and located such Indians as desired it, on farms, they thinking that if he goes away such work will cease. X One of the Indians present on the 28th ultimo said that they wanted "the Indians, not whites, to cut logs." My predecessor, I understand gave all Indians who wished to and would do a creditable day's work, en ployment in cutting logs and doing other work. I have, as yet, no au-thority to cut logs, and have therefor, not employed any labor for that purpose.. L *mtr however, employing, now, seventeen Indians on ditch work* i£)__sr^ijrfj?^^ occasion when I met them, that the Authority at 7/ashington desired them to be located on farms; that ditches were necessary"for them to earn a livelihood, to become as white sen: to cast away their nomadic habits and to educate their children so that they would know for themselves what the white man said, when he talked to them: so that they could write, too, and know the meaning of a paper: that Washington would aid them in their efforts: that their talk was not good, &c. & c. I send you the above condensed report of a three hour's talk, for,. your.-information- and for the reason that I promised that I would send whatever the Indians said to the "Father at Washington," and that I would read them his reply. |
