FEBRUARY 7, 1924.- Committed to the Committee of the Whole House on the state of the Union and ordered to be printed. Mr. SNYDER, from the Committee on Indian Affairs, submitted the following REPORT. [ To accompany H. R. 2882.] The Committee on Indian Affairs, to whom was referred the bill ( H. R. 2882) to provide for the reservation of certain land m Utah as a school site for Ute Indians, having considered the same, report thereon with a recommendation that it do pass without amendment. This legislation permits the withdrawal of a tract of public land, containing 40 acres, m San Juan County, Utah, as a day- school site for Ute Indians. In anticipation of favorable action by Congress this tract described as a school site was temporarily " withdrawn From settlement, entry, sale, or other disposition until March 5, 1926." Arrangements have been made to erect a, school building, and as the Indians are to be benefited, both by individual allotments to be acquired and by the educational facilities offered, your committee has unanimously recommended this bill. The letter from the Secretary of the Interior proposing this legislation is attached hereto and made a part of this report. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR, Washington, December 5, 1923. Hon. SNYDER: I have the honor to submit herewith the draft of a pill to provide for the permanent withdrawal of a tract of unsurveyed public land, containing 40 acres, in San Juan County, Utah, as a day- school site for ute Indians. Section 27 of the act of June 30, 1919 ( 41 Stat. 3- 34), prohibits the withdrawal of public lands by Executive order, proclamation, or otherwise for or as an Indian reservation except by act of Congress.
