Show years ago, and was about my age when he died. His mother was captured by the Ut_ s in the Black Mesa area ( Quad 2C, SE^). lie died on Douglas Mesa ( Quad 1C, SE- 1). He was a very small child when they took him to Fort Sumner. His grandmother was called " Old Red Woman." They say he got his nau< a oecause ha wore a set of uniforms which was issued to him from the Shiprock Agency, and he went back to tin- Agency, pulled his uniform off and said, " 1 quit being a headman." He was a Medicine Man also, and perhorn^ d the ceremonies of Feather Way and Blessing Way. After these Navajos returned from Fort Sumner, they raised a large numuer of sheep, horses, goats, and e few had faros. Then the bureau of Indian Affair-stepped in and said the country was over- grazed. At that time Chee Dodge was a headman, and was Chairman of the Council. The livestock was reduced to what it is now, and left a bunch of us out there without any livestock at all. These men used to hunt wild animals for food at ear's Ears ( Q-_ ad ID, NEg), Blue Mountains ( Quad ID, NEx), and on the ridges following west of gear's Ears towards the river. They never mentioned meeting any other tribes of Indians while on these hunting trips. The women of this time, with their families, hunted pinyon and wild grains for food. They hunted these berries and grains on Bear's Ears ( Guad ID, mi), Slue Mountain ( Quad ID, NE£) and right around here where there are pinyon trees. The animal hunts and pinyon hunts which I have mentioned were all made before Fort Sumner- There were no other Indian groups living in the area where I grew up. I used to make pottery, and my mother used to weave baskets. We did not obtain pottery from any other Indian group. The Navajos who returned to Fort Defiance from Fort Sumner, were rationed at Fort Defiance. There were several headmen there that helped with th? rationing, and assisted the Navajos to get whatever the Government had for them. These men were: Bieh J_ lch__, " Red Shirt;" ailiin Ti_ lz. hini, ' Slack Horse;" besh Ligai'eXini, " Silver Maker;" and Ch',„ izMni, " alack Grass." <^" f£)*•':%£ -• y^- a- v,, a, w.•_*,!•"*:' 1. >:-.- y> r- - 2 u '-• ''~ g-^' u* 24- .
