Judicial Independence Conference

On 28 and 29 March 2009, GJPI observed the Judicial Federalism in Iraq conference organised by IIRL and USIP in Erbil. Chief Justice Medhat and Kurdistan region Chief Justice Ahmed were both in attendance along with many of the senior figures in the Iraq wide and Kurdistan Region judiciary and representatives from the executive and legislative branches of government. The Higher Judicial Council and Kurdish Higher Judicial Council established a joint committee to foster cooperation and to resolve regional issues and the problems that may arise from the application of federal and regional laws. The conference called for legislation to assist the application of Federal law in the Region.
