Is there a need for more CMS discussion? Quite a few will be dealing with CMS in the next year. Everyone needs a website. How do you make the content accurate, formatted, up to date? Mindy: the conference I just attended had a section on CMS; they talked about the gap between the technical implementers and the content people/users. There really has to be a lot of communication between both groups up front, before a CMS is chosen. Is that happening? Also, according to CMSWatch, 80% of CMSs fail, largely because of users (or non-users). Jon Ross: the SOA thing is important, but sometime the content is very specific and has no larger impact to the campus. We have to remember those SMEs who really don't want to know anything technical. Dave Adams: 3 things needed: (really) easy to use technology, good technology, buy- in/instruction/policy from the top. Dave Hoisve: faculty are different from staff on this campus; we can't insist they do anything. A critical mass of content acts as means of encouragement for all content contributors to keep their stuff up to date. Dave Packham: it helps if your CIO tells you to do it, too. The IT Managers group agrees that end user ease of use is a critical factor in selecting CMS solution.
