Title All Mgrs Mtg-2007.05.02-Reorganization
Subject Information Technology
Description Reorganization by Steve Hess We’ve had a few reorganization changes recently: Pres Young has asked that Steve Hess act as CIO and sit on his Cabinet. Steve has had a PT position at the Board of Regents helping CIOs with strategic planning â€" Pres. Young attended one of Steve’s presentations and said he didn’t hear that kind of topic at the Cabinet level; this lead to the change. ACS now reports to Steve instead of Arnie Combe. Meetings have begun to discuss all the ramifications. Research networks have also been assigned to OIT. We’ll become a node on the NewNet of I2. We’ll be the gigapop for Denver, parts of NM, Idaho, etc. We’ll try to represent the Western area in the new governance of I2. ITS will be bringing a consulting firm in to look at their options following HSC CIO Pierre Pincetl’s recent passing â€" there will probably be some kind of IT officer there. We will be working together for campus-wide standards, infrastructure, etc. Pres. Young wants campus to retain the central coordination and local control model without duplicating efforts and wasting money. Any changes will be very customer oriented. ITC will be the priority-setting body for enterprise-wide projects. ITAC will continue to handle technical issues. The changes shouldn’t affect LAN administrators much. It’s to be a collaborative environment â€" “fiefdoms†can continue as long as we work with each other. The president is on board with a central data center. We have proposed a site just east of the EBC (don’t know if it will be the site) â€" the data center should be built in the next 3-5 years. Budgets are allocated at the Cabinet level â€" having a seat at the table is a big deal. Steve’s office is in the EBC mainly because there is space; UEN’s director does report to Steve. UEN is a $35-37 million organization. Timeline for planning to eliminate overlap? Hopefully by the end of the summer for new reporting/organizational structure.
