Subject Information Technology
Description Public Safety Outdoor Wireless Project update by Dave Packham 7 cars, 4 towers, are up and running. Trapeze APs - order has been placed for 5 more outdoor APs. One is on top of a Med Tower, Stadium, Browning Bldg, Komas. Will put one on Huntsman, a couple other locations. (Stadium will have 2 APs.) They (Public Safety) seem to love it. Segue into: Campus Wireless Standards. Correct document was sent to the IT Mgrs list from Dave in his 3rd email. (-: Please look at this document - it will be the standard for campus from here on out. Discussion on who to drop, when to drop, etc. Suggested - Summer 2006 (end): WPA1 and WPA2 will be turned on and WEP will be disabled. If you feel strongly about this, let Dave know. Also, for ubiquitous access, secure and insecure will be mandated for all APs and areas served by these APs - not just common or specific areas. Larry Okun: seems like we have to force users using WEP to buy something new or begin using insecure. Wants a 3rd SSID. Rob W and Dave P: WPA1 is pretty old and most cards support this. Best Buy sells a WPA2 card for $8. 802.1x was the better choice at the time of implementation. Bryan Morris: things broke when things weren't consistent; trying to make things consistent. Trying to find cards that aren't at least WPA1; not finding them. If there are cards out there that will be a problem, please let us know. The campus wireless committee does exist. NeRF and Wireless Friday groups, ITAC oversees these groups. Want to formalize and finalize the doc for ITAC and ITC by the end of Public Safety Outdoor Wireless Project update - Dave Packham 7 cars, 4 towers, are up and running. Adding additional SSIDs takes away from bandwidth; most APs can only handle 4. Most advanced operating systems (Mac OSX) will prefer "highest" secure method; Windows XP. 802.1x, dynamic WEP won't come up if it's disabled in a user's client. Should be unnoticeable for end users. If using a local department SSID, please avoid using the terms "secure" and "insecure" to keep confusion down. Hardware: Trapeze and Aruba (primary); Foundry and Cisco (secondary) - per published standards. Send Dave email (reply to his last email) with questions, comments.
