Title All Mgrs Mtg-2005.11.02-VoD Survey
Subject Information Technology
Description Compression and Architecture Survey Findings by Paul Burrows, Media Solutions. Paul is reporting on a report. There is a New Media Ecosystem ahead! Pushing and pulling media, convergence of media, etc. MPEG-4 produces higher quality with faster delivery times. Paul's VoD team sent out two campus surveys: Digital Video and Audio Distribution and Digital Asset Management. Only got 5-6% response. Survey #1: over 55% are distributing digital video and audio. Sounds like campus wants to do this ourselves. 50% are acquiring and editing DVA and are offering the media to other groups. Good support for best practices, standards and guidelines, and training. Centralized services questions - answers always skewed to very beneficial and beneficial. MPEG-4 produces higher quality with half the bandwidth requirements; ISO-compliant MPEG-4 objects are player agnostic. (Flash Video may be a bump in the road - uses a proprietary protocol, NOT MPEG-4.) Survey #2: 20% of respondents have a DAM system of sorts. 60% of those employ a metadata scheme.
