Title Old movie and circus posters c. 1920s to 1940
Subject Murray City events; entertainment; movies; circus; advertising
Description This old poster was discovered on the side of the Hoffman building when the Grecian Gardens restaurant next door was demolished. These posters were created to capture the imagination and draw audiences to the show. Sometimes exggerated, often colorful, posters were printed and distributed by the thousands. They were never meant to last more than a few weeks so it is rather amazing that these survive today. The circus began in the late 18th century as equestrian exhibitions and later added tumbling, rope-dancing and juggling. These posters became the only method of advertising in an age without radio, T.V. or the Internet. Today they are highly sought after by collectors. Unfortunately, these posters were destroyed by vandalism.
