Title Surface...ing
Date 2010-07
Description What happens inside our minds is often just as important as what transpires in the natural world. These private thoughts, feelings, emotions and ambitions are crucial in forming our being. Although difficult to access and sometimes accept, these fragments that make up our psyche can be contradictory in nature and frequently embody dualities that create conflicting desires within us. The working Surface...ing explores conflicting psychological issues, creating emotional narratives that, in most of my pieces are situated directly on top of the heads of a series of female busts. Working with red clay imbedded with colorful mosaic chips, I created full female figures that address the archetypal female psyche. I then crafted more specific depictions of individual women and their psychological dramas with a series of busts. Finally, I used half- female/half-dog forms to focus on the domestication of women. Each sculpture's unanswered questions lead me to the next. The ideas I developed during this project cultivated many new ways of thinking about my work and artistic practice, as I continue studying how to visually evoke emotion and speak about human identity.
