Description The body o f work represented it this packet reflects on remembered and imagined experiences from childhood. Mostly symbols from a suburban world, the subject matter includes above ground pool and BMX bikes; the people portrayed are my family. These paintings illustrate what is specific about memory and what has escaped. The specificity o f my memory has a strong influence on my approach to composition. Singular details are selectively drawn as they are selectively remembered. My painting style reflects the deterioration of memory, in that not everything is clear. The ambiguous space in the picture plane, which consists o f crudely drawn line and drips of paint, isolates the more rendered figural narrative. In addition to memory, I use old family photographs as reference for my paintings. The photos help me to renew and situate these remembered mental states. These scraps o f memory, along with the photographs, coalesce into scenes of personal validation. The paintings become moments o f familial longing, which are portraits o f the indescribable emotion contained in shared attitudes toward family, friendship, love.
