Hotel Utah's rooftop restaurant opened in 1914 with the name "Roof Gardens." It was located atop the original west wing of the 10-story building. Renamed "Starlite Gardens" in 1936, it offered open-air dining and dancing under canopies. A renovation in 1961 enclosed it with a roof and glass windows, and it was renamed the "Sky Room." It was actually two rooms, one designed after a French pattern, the other after an English club. After the 1974-1976 renovation, when the west wing was extended northward, the restaurant extended into the north end and was renamed "The Roof." Hotel Utah closed in 1987, was remodeled as office space for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and was rededicated as the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in 1993. In that year, the Roof restaurant reopened in the north half of the tenth floor west wing, to continue its tradition of fine dining. The original space to the south became the Garden Restaurant, with furnishings and skylight that capture some of the atmosphere of the early decades. |
