Additional Information The Lafayette Ballroom, located on the east side of the Hotel Utah on the Mezzanine level, was the site of meeting displays, banquets, and other special events. The Hotel Utah was built in 1909 - 1911, with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as the primary stockholder. After 76 years as Salt Lake City's premiere hotel, it closed in 1987 and was converted into church office space. It was renamed the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in 1993. Parts of it are open to the public, including the Lafayette ballroom, which has been remodeled as a chapel for downtown wards of the Church
