Title Faustus, Marlowe, and Bosch: Intersections of medieval fantasy imagery
Year graduated 2015
Date 2015-04
Description This thesis is a theoretical costume design project for Christopher Marlowe's play The Tragical History o f the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus that uses The Garden of Earthly Delights, a triptych painting famous for its outlandish imagery by the Dutch Renaissance painter Hieronymus Bosch, as its sole visual inspiration. Both explore similar religious and alchemical themes, complementing each other well for theatrical design. In addition to the design project, this thesis researches the historical context and academic issues associated with the play, the painting, and the lives of their respective creators.
