Description Few studies have been performed to consider the effects of algorithm use on both cost reduction and clinical outcomes. This study evaluated the use of an evidenced-based algorithm and data collection sheet in 64 females with acute cystitis. The study was a descriptive retrospective study, which took place in a university student health clinic. Charts were reviewed prior to the implementation of the algorithm and compared with charts after the algorithm was implemented. Outcome was determined by treatment failure. Information collected from clients was also compared. Descriptive statistics were used for analysis. Significant savings were noted in the postalgorithm group with p value = 0.001. Failure was statistically greater in the postalgorithm group, demonstrating a p value of 0.023. This unexpected finding suggested that algorithm use can decrease patient charges, but also showed that algorithms should be reviewed and constantly updated to prevent adverse clinical outcome.
