| Description |
The term ""basal ganglia"" refers to several masses of gray matter situated deep within each cerebral hemisphere: the caudate nucleus, the lentiform (lenticular) nucleus (the putamen and globus pallidus), and the claustrum. These masses are often referred to as the corpus striatum because they are traversed by several myelinated nerve bundles that give them a striated appearance in most histologic sections. In addition to the corpus striatum, two other structures the subthalamic nucleus of Luys and the substantia nigra in the mesencephalon are usually included when one discusses the ""basal ganglia."" |
