Description Meningitis is an infection of the leptomeningesthe surrounding surfaces of the brain. It is caused by a variety of organisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. The subarachnoid space offers little resistance to infection, and the CSF facilitates its spread over the brain and spinal cord and into the ventricles. Although the pial vascular bed allows the passage of PMNs, there are no capillaries in the arachnoid itself, and the rate of access of PMNs into the subarachnoid space may be insufficient for an early infection to be abolished. Whatever the reason, virulent organisms that invade the subarachnoid space can cause death within a few hours, and bacteria that are nonpathogenic elsewhere in the body can cause a devastating neurologic illness. There are four main types of meningitis: (a) acute bacterial meningitis, (b) acute nonbacterial (aseptic) meningitis, (c) subacute or chronic meningitis, and (d) pachymeningitis.
