Description A comprehensive discussion of color vision is beyond the scope of this chapter. Instead, we will limit our discussion of this subject to an overview of normal color vision and its underlying physiologic mechanisms, congenital and acquired color vision deficiencies, the use and interpretation of common clinical color vision tests, and the diagnostic value of color vision testing in ophthalmic and neurologic disorders. Several excellent sources are available for those interested in a more thorough discussion of color vision, the history of color vision research, and a detailed account of color vision deficiencies in specific ocular disorders. In particular, the book by Kaiser and Boynton contains an especially interesting chapter pertaining to the history of color vision.
