Macular Thickness Measurements with Frequency Domain-OCT for Quantification of Retinal Neural Loss and its Correlation with Cognitive Impairment in Alzheimer's Disease (.pdf)

Alzheimerʼs disease (AD), the most common cause of degenerative dementia, is characterized by progressive cognitive deficits, including memory disturbances, aphasia, apraxia, agnosia and visual abnormalities. The purpose of this study it to evaluate the ability of frequency domain OCT (fd-OCT) to estimate neural loss in eyes with AD. We also verified the existence of correlation between AD-related cognitive impairment and macular and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness measurements.
