Description Pain associated with ophthalmoplegia may be a sign of a lesion in the orbit or in the region of the orbital apex, the superior orbital fissure, the cavernous sinus, or the retrocavernous area. The signs and symptoms of the syndrome vary slightly depending on the area affected. Therefore a study of the clinical picture will often pinpoint the anatomical site involved, ultimately establishing the etiologic cause.
