Nystagmus, the rhythmic to and fro oscillation of the eye, has often been regarded as enigmatic. In fact, the distinguished neuro-ophthalmologist Wilbrand once advised "never write on nystagmus, it will lead you nowhere." The word nystagmus is derived from the Greek word (nystagmus) meaning drowsiness which, in turn, is derived from (nystazein) - to nod in one's sleep. This is a curious derivation since almost all forms of nystagmus are absent during sleep and seem to require wakefulness for full development. |
