Title Syndrome of Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (ION)
Creator Ellenberg, Carl
Subject Ischemic Optic Neuropathy; ION Definition; ION Diagnosis; Ischemic Optic Neuropathy Symptoms; ION Pathogenesis
Description The above observations provide strong evidence that the syndrome of ischemic optic neuropathy, no matter what the underlying cause, is indeed related to vascular ischemic disease, and that the visual deficit relates to infarction in the retrolaminar portion of the optic nerves. Here natural decompression is not possible because of the rigid confines of the sclera. The location is within the arterial territory of the posterior ciliary arteries.
