Creator Steven E. Feldon, MD, University of Rochester Medical Center

Description Brougham et. al. wrote the classic description of pituitary apoplexy in English. They analyzed five cases clinically and provided pathologic documentation of necrosis and hemorrhage within pre-existing pituitary adenomas. They noted a dismal prognosis as all their cases had come to autopsy. Since then, many authors have considered this topic, usually providing single case reports or small series of cases. The clinical profile of the disease has changed markedly in recent years, partly on account of improvements in radiographic techniques, allowing diagnosis of milder forms.
