Description Babinski (1909) suggested that isolated hysterical symptoms were due to the patient's suggestibility. Symptoms disappeared (momentarily) when examination methods used excluded the possibility of suggestion. Suggestibility wasn't associated with psychological pathology. Distinguishing conscious from unconscious behavior by signs and symptoms alone to delineate malingering from functional is not possible.
