Description In the spring of 1981, the Centers for Disease Control(CDC) in Atlanta reported on the occurrences of uncommon opportunistic infections and malignancies among previously healthy young homosexual men in New York and California. This newly recognized immunodeficiency state was referred to as the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). In 1983, the etiologic agent, aretrovirus, subsequently referred to as human immunode-ficiency virus (HIV), was initially isolated.
