Description Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) wasfirst described recognized to be a distinct disorder by Astrom, Mancall, and Richardson in 1958. The syndromewas identified primarily on the basis of its unique patho-logical features of demyelination, abnormal oligodendro-glial nuclei, and giant astrocytes. The three described cases also shared similar clinical manifestations including dementia, visual impairment, and hemiparesis.
