Description |
Neurodegenerative disorders characteristically affect neuronal populations in a selective manner. Examples include Parkinson's disease (dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta)[l,2], Alzheimer's disease (corticocortical and hippocampal circuits)[2,3], Huntington's disease (dorsal striatum projection neurons)[4], and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (motor neurons). In most cases, the cause of this selective vulnerability is unknown but may hold the key to the underlying mechanism of disease. |
